During the  Then, Now, Tomorrow – After the War exhibition, a large community wreath will be created by visitors to the Peacock Gallery at the Auburn Botanic Gardens to commemorate all those who served their countries and those who lost their lives in wars, including those involved in the First World War one hundred years ago.

Commemoration involves remembering, honouring and showing respect usually on an anniversary of an event and often involves a ceremonial aspect.  Each year on Anzac Day (25thApril)  commemorative services are held at dawn, which was the time of the original landing at Gallipoli in 1915.  The services are usually held at war memorials across Australia and provide an opportunity to reflect and remember. To find a memorial close to you see Memorials in NSW or to find Memorials in Auburn City visit the Auburn RSL Sub-Branch page here.

The laying of wreaths at memorials is an important part of the Anzac Day commemoration.  The wreaths are usually circular and include leaves and flowers.  The red “Flanders Poppy” is one of the flowers that is associated with Anzac Day wreaths.

The impacts of wars resonate with the Auburn community and everyone is invited to create a poppy and add it to the wreath to commemorate all those who have lost their lives and served their countries in wars, including those involved in the First World War one hundred years ago.
